Lyrics:
Full of despair inside a darkness
Self conscious and scared, held prisoner of war
Running out of air, buried in a sadness
Want a way out of this paralyzing world
And the sound of the cries when a family's loved one dies
It echoes through a vacant room where a young soul still resides
When the night is cold and you feel like no-one knows
what it's like to be the only one buried in this hole
You can make it to the sunrise.
(Woah. Woah. Woah)
You can make it to the sunrise.
(Woah. Woah. Woah.)
Searching for a way to escape the madness
A dire need for change as we fight for better days
The hurt and the pain cut deep like a razor blade
Holding in a cry for love, abandoned and afraid
When the night is cold and you feel like no-one knows
what it's like to be the only one buried in this hole
You can make it to the sunrise
(Woah. Woah. Woah)
You can make it to the sunrise
(Woah. Woah. Woah.)
I won't go to my grave until a difference is made
I won't go to my grave until a difference is made
(Until a difference is made)
When the night is cold and you feel like no-one knows
what it's like to be the only one buried in this hole
You can make it to the sunrise
(Woah. Woah. Woah)
You can make it to the sunrise
(Woah. Woah. Woah.)
I won't go to my grave until a difference is made
(Until a difference is made)
Until a difference is made
(From time to time, there arise among human beings,
people, who seem to exude love, as naturally as the sun gives out heat.)
Summary:
Our Last Night is an American post-hardcore band that was formed in 2004 by two brothers, Trevor and Matthew Wentworth. Their song “Sunrise” was released on their album Oak Island in 2014. The band says a lot of the lyrics for sunrise were based on a documentary called “Bully”. The song “Sunrise” isn’t a song that’s based solely on depression. It’s more of a song of hope for the people that suffer from depression, and turn to music as their outlet. The first few lines of the song say, “Full of despair inside a darkness, Self-conscious and scared, held prisoner of war, Running out of air, buried in a sadness, Want a way out of this paralyzing world”, are describing a person suffering from depression. Depression makes you feel like you’re stuck inside of a cloud and you can’t get out. It also makes you feel very sad. And, when it says “want a way out of this paralyzing world”, it’s referring to committing suicide because the reality is just too much to handle. The chorus goes, “When the night is cold and you feel like no-one knows, what it's like to be the only one buried in this hole, You can make it to the sunrise. (Woah. Woah. Woah), You can make it to the sunrise, (Woah. Woah. Woah.)” The chorus is saying that even when you feel like you’re all alone, you’re not. People still care and always will. The night is the worst part of depression, but they’re saying that you can make it through the darkness. The very last line of the song isn’t so much sung as it is said. “From time to time, there arise among human beings, people, who seem to exude love, as naturally as the sun gives out heat” Which means that people, usually with depression, are loved. But, they don’t really notice it because the people around them don’t show it as much as they should.
